Preprints help solicit feedback for your research work prior to formal publication

Research that has been done needs to be written up and published as a journal article in order to communicate the research findings. Hence, journal publication is a form of research communication. However, traditional journal publication is a lengthy process and often takes months to publish a single article.

Over the past ten years, there is increasing use of a new publication format known as preprints, which is a form of journal pre-publication. Briefly, research work that can be communicated to the public is published on a preprint server first as a preprint. Doing it this way allows the authors to solicit feedback which can help to improve the research work prior to formal journal publication. Such feedback is absent in the traditional mode of journal publication, and has been shown to enhance the quality and robustness of the research work described in the final journal publication.
